  • The AI has no imagination .....

In a challenge game (Zeiter's) Yang was an uber-AI, and ended up with 126 bases. But in his baselist, he had 3 pages (over 30 bases) named thus:

    G.

(and here's a copy of my 2345 turn if anyone wants to see what an uber-AI can do) - it's SMAC

    Sparta 2345

(altho I have Yang infiltrated, it's easier to use the Scenario editor to view his faction)

    G.

You see he is from Hive 62, and not Hive 62, while he is from Hive 62 that is not the same as Hive 62, but is infact the Hive 62. And he is from Hive 62.Aha. Aha. Aha.

Yeah I've seen this behavior before. It's quite a bug considering that if you name a base identically, it get's renamed to 'somebase-2'. So the code is there but was hardly tested.

I've made enough bases to suffer from this. It seems that after you run out of base names and greek letters, the next base is named according to its order of founding.
The next base after that, however, is given the same name. Since bases shouldn't have the same name, it gives it a -2.
The next base after that is given the same name as the first, but with a -2, which matches the second base's name, leaving you with two bases with the exact same name. Every subsequent base is (by default) named like this.
Furthermore, events at bases with such duplicate names tend to not pop up.

A similar problem happens with duplicate faction names.

The last time I actually made enough bases for this before declaring myself the victor was when I initially spaced my bases loosely to have more tiles to work, then filled in (doubling my base count) when I launched nutrient satellites. This seemed to be a pretty good mix between having enough tiles to cover with crawlers early in the game, and having enough bases full of specialists later in the game.

Good god! I've created a monster!

How in the world did Lal manage to snag the CDF?

Hehehe, with the base names, it is kinda like when Alexander the Great conquered Persia. He named roughly 15 cities "Alexandria". He even named a city after his horse, Bucephalus!

              Q1: "Zeiter's Yang" is a modified AI??

Q2: How do you get screenshots that don't look like oilswirls or blank?

Use the windows key or alt tab to get to the properties for settings and change it from 8-bit to whatever you usually use.

Not really modified. Just incredibly boosted.

I just hit "printscreen" and save to Microsoft photo editor. (I use the windows key, and and in XP it's one of my "frequently used" progs) Then I just crop out the unwanted portions of the file

Opening MPE first, then loading smac and alt/tabbing would work as well

I don't alter any settings or whatever (wouldn't know how to)
