They´re building a tunnel as part of an extensive road project in Gothenburg. It will be ready some time 2006...

From the glossy brochures by Vägverket (Swedish National Road Administration):

"Götaleden is the most extensive road project in the
Göteborg Agreement. A 1.5-kilometre tunnel will be
used by 65,000 vehicles a day and will open the southern
bank of the river to the city’s residents, tourists,
opera lovers and trams. The Göta Tunnel will enable
the city to make contact once again with the water. [...] Moving almost all the traffic into a tunnel between
Järntorget and Lilla Bommen will improve the
environment"

At least this is what they claim. I say it´s bull****. The whole road project will create more traffic and even more pollution in the city.

But this is not the place to discuss enviromental destruction and the problems of our car-dependent society...
