Just icons with text, no links whatsoever.

That's a link, that's a download, and that's an image.

Well, I could call the last category Gallery, but all that stuff can appear on the side widget.

That stuff that isn't linked on the widget, is broken either because I don't have the file from our old file database, at least not, yet. Or it is a link to an external site that is broken.

I can't access (don't have permission) any of those links.

I've yet to see an actual link/clickable item on the widget. (I'm on crome, BTW)

Looks like somebody messed around with the Apolyton forum usergroups. I reset the permissions, so it should work, if not complain.
