In Spore you see the full life cycle for your creature.
You start out as a simple protean microbe in the big ocean in the Cell Phase. When your creature is advanced enough it walks onto land in the Creature Phase. As soon as the brain of your creature has evolved enough you enter the Tribal Phase, where you fight against other tribes of other species. When your species is dominating you enter the Civilization phase, fighting for world domination of your culture. When the planet is yours it's time to explore the Galaxy.
