    Some rebuttals:

    1) Civ3 might have 2 expansions but last time I checked so does Civ4. And even comparing Civ3 'complete' with Civ 4 vanilla the 'complete' label is a bit misleading since C3C is fundamentally broken on several levels.

    2) Civ4 actually wins out for mods in quality (fall from heaven, Rhyes and fall etc) and I'd be surprised if it lost out in quantity as well (link?). Civ4 is much more modable on a fundamental scale.

    3) The 'which game did you play first' theory is not that strong empirically since almost everyone played Civ3 first, and the balance of opinion on both sites (more strongly here yes) is in favour of Civ4.

    4) Bombardment works differently in BtS already. Yes the Vanilla treatment is a bit unbalanced but it's still better than your empire being invulnenerable to the AI once you get a stack of siege, like in Civ3.

Civ3 could maybe even have more mods than Civ4, having been around for 4 years longer, but Civ4 definitely wins on the quantity of significant mods. Civ3 modding was very limited by its editor, you couldn't really write custom AI code or create entirely new game concepts. I must give credit to Civ3 modders, though, the amount of inventive stuff done within the confines of Civ3's editor is impressive.

One of the things I enjoy more about CIV3 is the ease of moddability for a novice such as I.

Agreed! C3C introduced as many major problems as it fixed.

          2) Civ4 actually wins out for mods in quality (fall from heaven, Rhyes and fall etc) and I'd be surprised if it lost out in quantity as well (link?). Civ4 is much more modable on a fundamental scale.
Agreed! Civ4 is so much more modable, and has also attracted a lot more of the best modders than Civ3 ever could. Some of the modders went on to have their work officially included in Civ4, or even became Firaxis employees!

          3) The 'which game did you play first' theory is not that strong empirically since almost everyone played Civ3 first, and the balance of opinion on both sites (more strongly here yes) is in favour of Civ4.
Agreed! I played Civ3 before Civ4 and I LOATH Civ3 for numerous reasons, including horrendous corruption, ICS, RoP-rape and siege SoD's. Add to that the enhancement of certain strategies in C3C and the destruction of other viable strategies and you end up with a game that is unplayable.

          4) Bombardment works differently in BtS already. Yes the Vanilla treatment is a bit unbalanced but it's still better than your empire being invulnenerable to the AI once you get a stack of siege, like in Civ3.

Get my combat mod and siege/navy can again bombard, and aircraft gain new missions (building bombing, naval bombing etc).

Conclusion: keep Civ4 and beat your Civ3 friend over the head with a blunt object till they change.

              Ditto

The death of ICS alone for me makes CIV IV a better game. Instead of mindlessly spamming cities to victory, you actually have to strategize city sites.

And I play CIV because its a Turn Based STRATEGY game.

I agree, Civ4 is definitely best. But as for the strategy on city placement, I'm not sure. I agree, for myself it's like that. But I spoke to a guy I know who is a god in gaming, and he said that the most important thing is to get the max out of the terrain, and that he'd place cities so that every single plot is used, as far as possible, without regard to what the terrain is. And this is the guy who discovered the bug in Civ3 that made the game crash if you got more than one billion in population before year 0 AD.

Why do you call IRL animation a bug?
