it does not require excessive moderation, has no reasonable reason to search through it, and i for one do not want to see a Word Association Thread XXLVI or whatever in 2 months.

You got that wrong. 500 posts is the rule, not the exception. There's no good reason why the word association thread needs to be exempt from the rule, so it falls under it.

Why are Tech threads allowed in OT?

Why are History threads allowed in OT?

Just sharing a question is all

This might seem trivial but it is probably a decision by a mod who is working whether or not to enforce site rules...

Heck, I am just sitting in the living room and even I know where the trash can is, wish some would tell other trash goes outside, frolicking goes in one room and gaming in another thread

Ok, probably wasting my time, just curious though......

Apolyton can be inflexible to be sure, but all those rules make sense to me.

We try not to be thread NAZI's. Somebody made a comment earlier about "trusting the posters"... In a way, we do when it comes to posting tech threads and history threads in the main OTF. The sub forums are there for people to use. However, some people still oppose the sub forums and just post whatever they want in the OTF. If we move ALL of them, people get all excited, complain, whine, and basically, it isn't very productive. So yeah, we leave threads that are obviously tech and history threads in the OTF. If people aren't going to try to make the sub forums work, moving threads and pissing people off isn't going to work either.

As far as the original posts...
I wish we didn't have to limit it to 2 threads a day, but too many people abused that policy, and that's why it was put in place. I would like to trust all the posters to be sensible, but many have proved they can't be trusted

As far as DL's go... that rule isn't going to change. People use DL's to cause problems, attack other posters and basically disrupt the site.

As far as the personal threads go... just what we need, the ole Asher sucks threads, or other such threads. People seldom start a thread about a specific person to praise them... it's usually the other way around. Those kind of threads are against the basic intent of the rules of discussing the topic, and not getting personal.

The 500 post rule is another matter. There used to be a reason for it when it came to slowing down the use of the thread. That is no longer the case. However, Snoopy has given an honest answer. It stops many of the threads that probably should have been ended much sooner.

If a topic is really worth going past 500... opening another thread isn't all that difficult.

No matter what rules we try to enforce, somebody isn't going to like them. We can't please everybody. And the first three rules that were pointed out have come about because of posters actions. If people had behaved, we wouldn't have those rules

Thanks for your comments and opinions.

Seriously though, I agree we should try to use the subforums whenever possible

Speak for yourself! According to my statistics, 96% of all deleted threads on Apolyton are ones that praise me.

                              - the 500 posts-a-thread limit

Apolyton sometimes has the otherwordly air of North Korea with that stuff.
I don't think the first three rules (assuming I understand what you mean about the person-specific thread) are problems, but I don't see much need for the 500 post limit. At the very least perhaps relax it to 1,000. As confusing as searching a long multi-page thread is, it is more confusing to search several long multi-page threads.

I'd have to second Ozzy's comment. I thought the original reason for the 500 post limit was board troubles... But with the new software (crica 2002) that problem doesn't exist anymore...

not that I can see this affecting many threads; but still...
