  • Quick Smilie Box Choices

Yay, it is finally my time to complain about some banal smilie related thing in the community forum!

When making a new post there is a list of 30 smilies (out of 113) that you can just click to simply insert into the body of your message. My complaint is the selection of the 30 smilies for this honored position. I think we should rearrange things for maximum efficiency.

    My recommendations:

The 5 ban related smilies at the bottom of the box ( ) are rarely used and don't need to take up space from more relevant smilies in the box. They should be removed.

We don't need and all in the box. We already have the much cooler and , so I'd recommend trimming at least two from those initial 4.

Common, easy to type smilies like and don't need to be in the box since it takes more effort to move your mouse over to click than it does to just type them.

The rest I think are good choices. So if we remove those like 11, we get to free up space for better ones. I think we can debate over which ones should be included (based on overall use), but my opening salvo recommendation are for the following:

I think a limitation we should impose is that the smilies not take up additional space so as to mess up the box. So smilies like and are out.

It is a very simple setting to change in vbulletin admin, so there is no reason not to fine tune it.

    That is all.

There is a way to re-organize smilies in version 3 of vBulletin, but not in 2.x. We are running one of the latter, but that is misleading as we are running a heavily modified version of 2.x.

    One day, though...

(Oh -- your third poll option is quite . )

Ugh, yet another failing of Poly's outdated forum... *sigh*

You really need to update to 3. We're up to 3.6.8 PL 2 now. It really is worth it, even with all the mods and hacks 'poly has. There are even better hacks for v3!

But because I'm so nice to Apolyton, I went out and found you a nice new hack that can take care of this:

It's not as easy to update as it sounds.

We have an incredible amount of data that needs to be ported over. Much of our hacks into our 2.x copy would not be required as 3.x has its own comparable system, but we still need to be able to get data from the old and into the new seamlessly -- relatively, anyway. Further, for those features that we have that are not still not supported by vBulletin in 3.x compatibility between the two needs to be examined, tested and implemented.

On top of this, we are limited in our staffing numbers and available time for working on the site from those staff members. Therefore, it's taking some time (and, yes, longer than we would like).

As for the specific 2.0.3 display of smilies hack, we'll look into it -- appreciate the direct reference -- but that display may just have to wait until we move into 3.x.

Upgrading isn't all that painful. What data needs to be ported over? All the data is in the database and that isn't affected by an upgrade. You'd need to back it up, just to be safe, and that takes time, but you should be doing that regularly anyhow.

I'm not sure what the procedure is for upgrading from 2 to 3, maybe it is more intensive than I think, but I wouldn't imagine so. In any event, once you've gotten that past you, upgrading between v3 versions is really easy. You upload some new files and then there is this automated installer program that gets you updated seemlessly.

As for a working v3 board, you can check out the one I operate: http://forums.youthrights.org

Or, if you don't mind taking a look at the enemy, CFC has a v3 forum which is fairly nice: http://forums.civfanatics.com

Edit: And the difference may not be readily apparent. Much of the style things are done using templates that each site customizes itself. So things probably wouldn't look radically different if/when Apolyton upgrades, but it'll work much better and be a lot easier to manage for the admins/mods. A lot will be easier for us too.

One simple example is when writing out a post, if you highlight text and then click the bold button in the WYSIWYG editor it'll put the bold tags around it right away. v2 doesn't do that, you'd have to type in the text again and it'll be inserted at the bottom of your post. A small thing of course, which is why it is hard to just list off the minor improvements. But there are many, believe me they add up.

Ozzy, firstly, upgrading major versions isn't that easy. Upgrading between different v3 versions is easy - there's no autoupgrade for 2.0.3. to 3.x, however. And that's not even the key part. The key part here is that what we're running isn't really stock vB 2.0.3. Our version of the forum software is heavily modified, as Dan says, with lots of custom features added as hacks. Notepad, civgroups, PLUS, Hall of Fame - that's a few of the things we've created here, and anything we created ourselves would need to be upgraded manually.

If we had been running an unmodified or lightly modified forum we would have probably upgraded to vB3 a really long time ago
