  • On deleting threads

I'm quite sure it's been explained several times already, but I can't be bothered to actually search for the explanation, so... mods, admins, why do you so often delete (or move out of sight) threads about issues like asking to unban people?

I'm asking this because they're one of the best sources of entertainment on this forum. Verbal violence is fun, and I want to see a lot of it. With the generally quite low level of drama and the moderation that's sane in most respects, however, you can't just open a random thread and see a massive group fight where everyone is trying to beat the virtual crap out of everyone else. Unless it's on a subject which guarantees a group fight, such as banning people.

Because I know those threads will get deleted sooner or later, I usually just shoot off some tiny comment (because I don't know if I will have the time to write anything longer) and stick around to refresh the thread every five minutes. I keep thinking I should be doing something else, but because I know my quality entertainment could be taken from me any moment, I lack the willpower to do it anyway. It's not causing me any significant trouble, but it *is* a waste of time.

Sometimes someone will at some point archive some of the threads that are to be deleted, but for instance in the case of threads archived by Asher recently, they're horribly inconvenient to read because of the long ALT texts replacing icons (Asher lacks the technological expertise to properly archive a webpage).

Please think of all of your members and lock threads if you want the discussion to stop - it will make life so much easier for those deriving their lulz from internet drama .

(hm, maybe I should write a script to refresh and archive those threads in the background... it should be pretty easy, actually, except for reliably detecting when the thread has been deleted even given that the admins could change anything in the board code)

At risk of this post being deleted along with the rest of the thread...

He's got a point. Don't we all come here to enjoy ourselves? I can understand wanting to hold up some standards of behavior, as long as no one is actually being hurt or insulted (or people are enjoying themselves doing it to each other), why the fuss?

I too agree with Ari, what's accomplished with deleting that isn't accomplished with locking, unless it's just outright spam or illegal? Is it some sort of arcane idea of not wanting "bad" behaviour spreading by example?

Removing, rather than locking, threads, well, it makes me feel weird. Like it was all a dream.

I believe it's been clearly stated that the reason for deleting threads is basically to eliminate any sort of "trophy" or linkable history for the offender. I don't personally agree with that, but hey, it's not my site.

well... sometimes i like it when a spammer's threads are deleted. it keeps the forum clean and easier to read. nobody wants to see 15 locked threads on the first page, as that makes it harder to find the real topics.

so i am totally in favor of deleting threads if only for aesthetic purposes.

Mark, you just QFTed AAHZ. I'll give you a chance to rethink that and edit your post, in which case I'll remove this one.

That is correct... If they are deleted, people can't point to them and say, "see what a bad ass I was"

Perhaps, but as you can see, it opens up a whole different can of worms...

It's a catch 22... I wish posters didn't post stuff that had to be deleted... but they do. If you leave it up, even closed, it still stands there and people can point to it and say how cool they are. Deletion takes care of that problem. With some people posting multiple threads, it becomes an even easier decision.

Are deleted threads accompanied by a PM to the thread starter detailing the reason the thread was deleted?

I mean usually...present circumstances are pretty obvious.

Threads should never be deleted - it gives us -1s.
