  • PolyCast Episode 17: "A Little Bit More Coherent"

The seventeenth episode of the official Apolyton Civilization Site (ACS) has arrived. `News, `Modcast`, `Research Lab` and `Senate` makeup "A Little Bit More Coherent". Co-hosted by Daniel "DanQ" Quick, Wouter "Locutus" Snijders, Makahlua, returning guest co-host Rich "Provost Harrison" Harrison and first-time guest co-host Joe "snoopy369" Matise, total runtime is 59m:36s (28.6MB).

PolyCast is a bi-weekly, roughly one-hour production in an effort to give the Civ community now an interactive voice. Contributing greatly to the show`s interactive capability are means to call-in via Skype, telephone and email the co-hosts your questions or comments about Civ the game, community, or the show and Apolyton itself.

ACS is the first and to date only known Civ fansite to produce its own podcast.

I've done 18 civs on a duel map. It's quite fun. Some civs even had to move their settler to build their first city.

          Hi...Again

I'd thought you guys were delaying this Pod cast to also discuss about the live interview on BTS over at CFC. I guess that will be left for episode 18.

          My reasons to use Mercantilism

All the AIs tend to switch to Mercantilism as soon as they get banking for some reason, I don't know if that ever happens to you guys, but it happens a lot for me so I just also switch, no point being the only Civ having wanting foreign trade when everyone else doesn't want it.

Mercantilism by itself is quite weak, I generally run Mercantilism in combination with other civics and wonders.

          CIVICS:

          Representation (3beakers per Specialist)

          Pacifism (+100% GPP points)

Caste System (Free Specialist from Mercantilism, You can assign unlimited Scientist, Artist and Merchants and now you can get one for free if you combine them.)

          WONDERS:

The Statue of Liberty (combined with Mercantilism, 2 Free Specialist in every city is pretty powerful)

Angkor Wat (If you require extra hammers, assign a Priest, assuming if you have already assigned an engineer from a forge and need more hammers, Generally used before Industrial age)

The Sistine Chapel (To Assist in culture wars)

          About GGs

... War Academies give +25% Hammers to military units???

Are you guys still playing without the 2.08 Warlords patch?? lol,

well in the patch War Academies give you a bonus of +50% instead of 25% but their only available after Education.

Yeah I also think it's silly that Warlords are used to win battles at 90%+ odds, What's the point of having them if we end up losing them forever.

I remember reading a thread about improving the warlord by allowing a fallen warlord to come back after they die in battle by being returned to your capital, like they did in the Alexander scenario, but this time they can't grant you extra experience points, instead you only allowed to attach them to a unit to gain access to Warlord promotions (Eg- Morale, leadership, tactics)

          Cultural Victory

There are many variations, but for me what's most important is what's the Diplomatic situation is like before I commit myself for a cultural victory. I wouldn't want one of my Legendary cities taken by an advanced enemy just one turn before getting 3 Legendary cities.

Assuming your diplomatic situation is all good,

I've heard some people start their cultural victory (switching to 100% culture slider) as early as Liberalism, once they get the Free Speech Civic (+100% culture in all cities)

Personally I beeline to Democracy after Liberalism for Universal Sufferage Civics to gold rush Temples, Cathedrals.

I sometimes beeline to Communism for the Kermlin Wonder so my gold rushing is cheaper but only if my GNP is very high compared to other Civs.

I personally think getting 6-7 religions per city is a bit overboard for a cultural victory, imagine how many hammers you've lost by producing missionaries and find out they've failed to spread that particular religion in that city because generally the chances of spreading the 6th and 7th religion in a city is very low.

The minimum numbers of religions for a cultural victory is 3, 4 is optimal, anything over 5 per city and you start getting diminishing returns.

Starting the Cultural Victory as early as Liberalism with only 3 religions getting 400-500 Culture points a turns is probably about the same as getting 800-1000 Culture points after radio in the late game I guess so it really depends on game play style in the end.

Yes, no delaying -- this episode was recorded on June 9th as per schedule (see http://polycast.apolyton.net/about.php#production). Indeed the BtS chat on CFC will be covered in Episode 18.

Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful feedback as usual. Response to follow if not in this thread than in a future episode.

              Must try that.

Great show - very good sound quality .

Found the discussion re GG's interesting - I almost never attach them to unit - they tend to go into my one or two military cities. I intially used to attach them to units - but then they got killed - so city settlement became my favoured use for them.

generally the chances of spreading the 6th and 7th religion in a city is very low
I have this problem as well. I find it difficult to get more than 4 or 5 religions in each city - missionaries always seem to fail for me after that.
I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.

I made a mod for Dan and Imran. It adds a Peasant and Slave level to the game. Although I'm having trouble attaching it to this post.

Copy and past what is in the text between the 9th and 10th of Assets/XML/GameInfo/HandicapInfo

Have fun winning for the first time or tell me if need a easier one. I still haven't figured out to get the game to call the levels by their proper name. That means when you make a game, there will be 3 settlers.

-- appreciate your time on this.

I am doing quite well on Warlord level . Perhaps I'll send Imran on a mission...

3 settlers? Are you trying to drive me into debt or scientific oblivion? Both?

3 settler levels. It will say:

                              Settler
                              Settler
                              Settler
                              Cheiftan

when you are picking a level. I can't get the first 2 to go by Peasant and Slave.
