Apolyton & CivFanatics Merging! (APRIL FOOLS)

To clarify a few things.
Both separate (for now) sites are running vBulletin. That vastly simplifies merging the databases. If it works the way we intend it, people registered at both forums will retain their username for CJ, with their posts at both former forums counting as theirs.
This OTF thread really explains a lot behind this decision. We just see that merging with CFC is the best way of providing the Civ community with a site that has the best of everything - something that can't now be said about either CFC or ACS as separate entities.
Finally, the announcement date. No, it's not a coincidence. Civjunction goes online now, and server bills are paid by month - today is the date when we officially go online and start.Last edited by Solver; April 1, 2007, 07:56.Solver, WePlayCiv Co-Administrator

some how or another as I started to read this thread, the tune "run to the hills" by iron maiden started playing word for word through my mind... picking up pace and volume...
can not get it to stop....
Run to the hills
(harris)
White man came across the sea
He brought us pain and misery
He killed our tribes, he killed our creed
He took our game for his own need
We fought him hard we fought him well
Out on the plains we gave him hell
But many came too much for cree
Oh will we ever be set free?
Riding through dustclouds and barren wastes
Galloping hard on the plains
Chasing the redskins back to their holes
Fighting them at their own game
Murder for freedom a stab in the back
Women and children and cowards attack
Run to the hills run for your lives
Run to the hills run for your lives
Soldier blue on the barren wastes
Hunting and killing their game
Raping the women and wasting the men
The only good indians are tame
Selling them whisky and taking their gold
Enslaving the young and destroying the old
Run to the hills run for your lives
(repeat to this idea ends....)
so the cfc folk wanna play do they? hope they like the water hot water

I like the layout of CivJunction. It's more clear and pleasant than 'Poly's webpages IMO. The green is easy on the eyes, and the use of Civ4 pics make for a good change over the old Apolyton logo
Also, the buttons on the top frame are way superior to the ordinary links that we currently have. Much more clear, much more visible(They could use flyover info though: I had to follow the link on "AON" to know what it was)
Edit: I hadn't noticed the background color. Still discreet, but more colorful than the grey we currently have at 'Poly. Good choice
The "navigation" section on the side could use a game logo next to the game names, for more immediate recognition.
However, it keeps the same flaw as 'Poly's classical pages (IMO), i.e a very narrow band in which the news are written, and a too broad column on the right. As a result, pictures can't be used in their full potential, and it's a bit austere.
I don't really understand why there are links to "news categories". If I click on the "Civilization IV" link, won't I arrive on the Civ4 page, precisely where only relevant news will be displayed? Also, I'm not sure so many people look for the news archive. The link to the archive might be at the bottom of the page, with simple "next" and "previous", and "archive" buttons.
Generally, I think the page would look better altogether if it just god rid of the right-sided links below the ones with a green background. It'd also look better if the freed space was used to broaden the column in which the news are written, as they could benefit from a visually appealing pagination.
But don't get me wrong: I focused on small things on the webpage to make it even better. But my impression is really really positive. Keep up the great workLast edited by Spiffor; April 1, 2007, 09:20."I have been reading up on the universe and have come to the conclusion that the universe is a good thing." -- Dissident

Since Dan just posyed something about Apolycon '07, it makes me pretty sure this a joke. Surely he would have known what would be happening yesterday.
