  • Who are the most quoted posters?

    Hi.

Taking into account obviously only the quotations where someone hits the quote button in the post of another poster, the forum engine should easily compute a list of who gets quoted the most. Just do a little +1 in quote count for every poster as soon as someone uses the quote button in their posts. Make it +0 if someone quotes himself.

Obviously doesn't work with manual quotes.

Does this exist already? Implement? Should be neat

and I thought this would be about quotes in people's signitures. I have quite a few of them. Some of them are quite embarassing, and some were made when I'm drunk. Sometimes I try too hard to say stupid things just to get quoted. .

But Fez probably still beats me in the signiture quotes. Or maybe Wiglaf.

From the book of.... somewhere, I still need to give it a name:

Quoting is often merely a derivative of metaspam and it's nutritional content varies depending on ingredients. The simple '+1s' or 'single-smilie-posts' response to a quote are in the junk food quadrant of the meta-spam food group diagram. That is to say they are quick and easy for those on the go but not satiating and can cause you serious health and social problems if you live soley from them.

In moderation quoting forms a healthy part of any meta-spam diet. Be sure not to take it to excess.

Might be hard to implement well. For example, one often quotes previous posts to show what specifically the response is being made to. However, suppose you start a new thread, and I include a full quote in my reply. Then I notice that my reply is the first in the thread, thereby making the quote unnecessary (see Dauphin's first post in this thread for a prime example of unnecessary quoting). I then go in and edit my post removing the quote. The quote count then needs to be updated, but it's not easy to do so.

In this forum the QUOTE tag does not know who it is quoting, so that makes it harder too. In other newer forums, they have the QUOTE=username tag - it would probably be much simpler to implement this feature in such a forum. Here, I doubt that will happen.

We already have the post count here, and, IMO, a quote count would just be more cause for spam, and it would just be another venue for the percieved e-penis++, which spammers will definitely make use of.

As you said, it doesn't know who it's quoting. I can change your name anytime. Someone changed my name in civ3 general to pis. I'm not sure if that was accidental or on purpose. .

or you can just use the quote tags without putting the name down (as I do when I'm quoting a newspaper or internet article).

And then some people quote multiple times in one posts to debate specifics of long post. Usually seen in debate threads.

Ecthy proposed that it counts you as quoted when someone clicks the quote button above your post. This is wildly inaccurate as it excludes all manual quoting and it does not even require that you actually make a post. Just clicking the quote button is enough.
