Private Messages: 71 reported, but only 18 in folders?

How can this happen?

On my forums main page, it says I have an overall amount of 71 PMs in my folders. Before I started cleaning them out it showed 150+. But now I'm down to 9 in the inbox and 9 under sent items, so where's the rest? Malfunctioning counters?

And this is with the "view from" pulldown menu set to "from the beginning" not just a month back or so.

Can there be PMs older than from the beginning that can never be shown? Is this a matter that the human mind cannot possibly grasp?

yes, there can be PM's sent before the beginning when time began.

Emptied the folders now, still reports I have 53 PMs in total. Don't know why but that reporting of 53 messages looks so familiar...

Ah, I think I had 53 messages in my folders before the last server move or forum update or something. So my counter was at 53 yet after that update or whatever it was my messages were all deleted. Theory.

I've noticed the same thing. It says I have 142 messages total, but there are only 31 in my Inbox and 41 in the Sent Items folder.

That makes 70 messages that the script thinks I have, but which are nowhere to be found.

I think I have a slight discrepancy also, but I´m to lazy to count the actual number...

Is the production of totally insightless remarks the only function of staff members here? And UR, the difference between '0' and '53' is easily seen, if one number is '53' and the folders are obviously EMPTY. I think I begin to see Asher's points.

It doesn't work for me at least, but that's probably because I'm not a PLUSer then. I thought it perhaps did something different since Gramps didn't get it to work that way either.
