I can never find the link to the article I read a long time ago, speaking about the size of communities. It made a strong point that once a community exceeds a certain size, it becomes effectively split into several communities that don't even know each other.

This was certainly true of Apolyton even back when the number of active posters was ~1000 - take the Civ3 community, the CtP and SMAC ones and the OTF community - members of one often don't know even the most prominent members of the others .
