What does *bump* mean?

Ive seen it every once and a while.. never enough for me to understand what it does or what it means... but yesterday I saw it used on another forum (NationStates) and decided I would drop the question. What does it mean when someone just throws *bump* up?

It means to "bump" a thread to the top of the page-1 list.
