Why Can't We Delete Our Own Posts?

It would be easy enough to have the software keep a copy of deleted posts - at least for a few days so as to prevent that sort of exploitation.
However, the current system works fine so there is no real need to change.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
