    It seems more intuitive than editing and leaving a blank post

    If you leave a flamebait and remove it later, you can make it look like that others have launched unprovoked attacks against you. Why do you think the software leaves a note automatically if you edit your posts 5 minutes after you post them?

      It would be easy enough to have the software keep a copy of deleted posts - at least for a few days so as to prevent that sort of exploitation.

      However, the current system works fine so there is no real need to change.
      I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).
