  • Thread limits and such

We have thread limits of 500 posts and stuff of that nature. However, these limits were decided upon at least 2 years ago with the software/hardware in use at that time. With all the upgrades, perhaps we should revise these limits based upon the new capabilities of the software/hardware.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

This one isn't going to reach any limit, soft or hard, that's for sure.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

The limits are there to keep thread-loading times at a minimum. To prove this for yourself, here is a simple test. Open up the pictures thread in one window (3920 posts as at the moment) and another thread in another window. Observe which one starts loading first. Observe which one finishes loading first.

True, but the last page currently has only 6 pictures, 3 of which are almost avatar-sized. If you compare the speed to another thread with a comparable number of pictures - the Galactic Overlord thread for instance - I'm sure you will still see the difference having less than 500 posts makes.

It's not the user end part of things, but the outdated coding of vB 2.0.3. It's not optimised for newer serverside software. Unless it's then some issue, but that's my guess, based on how newer versions of vB don't require something like that or haven't seen anyone else doing that, except Poly.

              I'm too lazy.

just post how many milliseconds difference it is. Or are you saying the difference can be measured in seconds?

the 500 limit has nothing to do with vbulletin
it was established in the ubb days when threads were stored in text files

the 500 limit is now a loading and management issue....

Loading of this thread: 3.234 seconds

Loading of pic thread (last page) 10.105 seconds

But you don´t load the entire thread do you? You only load one page at a time, right? Or is it something going on that we mere mortals can´t see?

500 is a good number for other reasons. A thread that goes that long without being closed by a mod brings glory on its creator as people felt it was obviously worth discussing.

By the time threads get to 500 they often bear no relation to the first post anyway.

Wouldn't a thread spawning new generations of threads bring more glory though? Hangman is now in its 19th generation for instance.
