What's the reason for the 500 post limit?

It is a carryover from the prehistoric uBB days, when having more than 500 posts in a thread made things difficult.
As for the Picture Thread - it's one of the god's thread, so it's exempt.(\__/) 07/07/1937 - Never forget

The picture thread was started by an admin. As Ming has said before, he or any other mod are not going to touch a thread an admin has started. So far, the admins don't feel like closing Markos' thread either.I'm building a wagon! On some other part of the internets, obviously (but not that other site).

So in short, there's no reason for the cap? Wouldn't it just save the mods some work to not close threads at 500 then?Visit First Cultural Industries

Back in the days of uBB it made a difference. If threads got too big strange things would start happening, like new posts not being registered, pages not being displayed properly, etc. The rule was instituted to prevent such problems.
Now on vBB the rule may be obsolete as there don't seem to be any problems with large threads anymore, but then again that might also be *because* we have the rule
Plus, the limit makes moderating threads easier. Ever tried deleting/editing a large number of posts from a thread (that's too valuable to delete altogether), or splitting one? Very tedious job, and there's a good chance of screwing it up.
But most importantly, it's an Apolyton TraditionTM
