If it were a true socialism (to each according to his ability, and to each according to his labor) I should have at least got some distribution of common goods don't you think? If it were "needs" it would be communism, instead of socialism.
And we all know we are not there yet.
As for elite status, everybody knows that it exist in every true socialism regime.
