  • How long will Apolyton last?

This is a question I have been nursing for a while. Now, first, the question is NOT how long will MarkG and DanQ ill decide to continue to run the site- that only they can answer.

The question is really how long do all of us really think this site- more specifically these forums, will last.

I aks becuase the internet is really a brand net thing in the grand scheme of things- really mass participation in the net is a decade-old phenomenon (few general sites predate 1994). Apolyton has been around for more than half that short history, which is quite an accomplisment.

But as posters, do you think you might be around for a 'Poly 15 anniversary if the site were still up? Do you think you could be part of an electronic community for so long?

I've been gaming in one form or another for almost 75% of my life (28 years out of 38), and computer gaming for 19 years, so there's no reason I would stop anytime soon. And 'poly is my favorite place to discuss gaming... so I'm sure I'll keep coming back as long as there's a site to come back to.

I guess it'll last as long as civilization will last.
And if civilization will cease to exists it will last even longer if another game might be found that is loved by most of this community, or the administrators of this site by then.

          1. the site - assuming the owners are interested, i see a long life. The civ franchise itself doesnt seem to be dead yet, with a future Civ4 - its an open question how long the Firaxis Civ/SMAC franchise will survive. If it doesnt Im optmistic that coverage of other related gaming series could be increased to keep the site alive.

          2. Personal use - like Stuie, i mainly use it for other games. OG has the potential, IMHO, to be at least as good as CSIPGS. I suppose there are general forums on strat and related games that would better match my interests, but im not real interested in seeking one out - here I sorta know peoples perspectives.

I also expect to get some of the games covered in the site that i havent played thus far.

              What is "civing"

I have no intentions of going anywhere. As long as I have a computer and an internet connection I will continue to spam.

My hope is that 'Poly lasts at least as long as I do.

If Civ dies, the Off Topic will live on. So will other games.

                    It will merely evolve.

I haven't booted up any Civ game in a year and a half.

                      I'm still here.

Apolyton will last as long as we continue to read the news pages, post in the forums and the site generates profits (or non significant losses).

Strangely I did this thread just under a couple of years ago; it may even have the same title. Most people then were predicting a very long life, and I don't think anything has changed. 'Poly (and me ) will be here for 5 more years at least, and probably more.

If anything, the situation is slightly better, since Mark's future ( ) military service was an issue back then, but we got through it fine.

Useless trivia fact of the day: today it has been exactly 2222 days since Apolyton was founded.

I say it'll last at least another 2222 days
