  • Problem Acessing Apolyton

Apologies if this seems OT, but I didn't want to place this topic there on account that it may simply get lost in all the OT talk there. Besides I visit this site mainly for the Civ3 forums/content.

In anycase here is my problem.

I have a home network. Internet Acess is done via a router. So both my computers share the same connection.

However this computer (Win 2k) can access Apolyton, but my new computer (Win XP) cannot. This is pretty new to me, as I was able to access Apolyton from my Win XP computer for a good half year. When I tried pinging the URL www.apolyton.net from dos prompt, I get no response back.

It seems like my XP computer just can't find the url. All other sites work find. Just Apolyton for some strange reason. Any ideas?

This goes in the A/C forum.

EDIT: and I'm mystified. All other sites work? And apolyton is working on the other computer?

OK, I mod should move this thread accordingly.

AFIK all other sites I want to access work. Apolyton for some reason is not working. Pinging the url returns a no response status. Trying to access it via IE and Opera returns URL not found.

Is Apolyton working on the other computer at the same time?

Try tracert apolyton.net (on the dos prompt).

Yes apolyton is working on this computer. But not the other, on the same connection.

I can only deduce it has something to do with my other computer.

The real mytery to me here is that i was able to access apolyton just fine on my xp computer for many months before and after c3c was released. I last visited around april then i took a break from civ. I'm now back and this is happening -_-

I'll attemp your suggesiton when I get a chance to use the xp machine.

            Just did a tracert

I was able to see the first 13 nodes and it appears I exited my local ISP and to a US network. But I hit a wall after that with time outs.

Strangely enough doing tracert on this win2k machine returns the same results. Time outs after node 13. But i'm still able to access this site.

The wall is Apolyton itself... Apolyton doesn't respond to ping.

(Incidentally, this is why your XP machine didn't get a ping return )

Can you access the main page?

Run telnet, connect to apolyton.net on port 80 or 8080, and store the result in a logfile. Did you get a bunch of http back?

Btw, does the page just not load, or do you get some poly-generated error? (or any error, for that matter)

Using a firewall on the other PC?

Both PC are hooked up to the same router.

No, I can't access apolyton at all from the other pc. url returns as invalide/dead. only here.

If not the PC's firewall software then how about the router's ACL? Perhaps its blocking the PC.

I suppose the router is okay if he can access Apolyton from the other PC. Still haven't heard if there is firewall software on the PC. If so, then the settings can be checked (I'm only familiar with Norton though).

I just had another thought. Is the problem PC's internet settings set to block or restrict cookies? I recall something similar happening to me over a year ago. Change setting to allow or prompt. May want to look over the security settings if that doesn't help but I have a good feeling about this.
