  • Fun Facts, Sports Division

A place to commemorate weird statistics, strange plays and such. I was inspired by this bizarre MLB record, which hit my FB feed today:

Which MLB player holds the record for the most seasons stealing at least one base without being caught stealing?
    Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

Not who I would have guessed.

OK, an easier one: Can you name the MLB teammates with the most times hitting home runs in the same game, career?

Hint: It's not Ruth and Gehrig. They're the second-place pair -- homered in the same game 73 times.

Another hint: It's not Mays and McCovey. Only 68 times for them.

The answer: Henry Aaron and Eddie Mathews, who homered in the same game 75 times.

                Not enough seasons together.

Interestingly, it's the same duos, in the same order, for most career HRs as teammates. Aaron/Mathews and Mays/McCovey had 13 years together; Ruth/Gehrig had 10.

              Aaron & Mathews - 863 HRs
              Mays & McCovey - 800 HRs
              Ruth & Gehrig - 771 HRs

prorated for ABs/games played I would expect Ruth and Gehrig to be 1

maybe not, Aaron/Matthews are almost 100 ahead

US Ryder Cup team didn't win a match on the opening day for the first time

2nd day ended better but it will require a record setting comeback tomorrow (late tonight)

Today's round ended with controversies, Brooks Koepka threw shade at Jon Rahm for hitting a scoreboard out of frustration in an earlier tournament. Rahm does act immature on the course but his response to Koepka was polite and measured.

The bigger issue: Patrick Cantlay didn't wear a hat and a rumor swirled he wanted $$$ to play and refused to wear one. So the fans started taking their hats off to mock him. The Iceman sank 3 birdies on the last 3 holes to win their match.

Problem is his caddie took off his hat on the 18th green to wave it around and apparently either walked across Rory's line for his birdie putt or was wandering around in the background as Rory was trying to line his putt up and had to tell him to move. The matter boiled over in the parking lot as Rory started swearing and pointing at someone and had to be ushered into the car by fellow Irishman Lowry.

just saw video, the caddie didn't walk across Rory's line but he was standing near the hole waving his hat while Rory was going thru his routine reading the putt and Rory asked him to move. Much ado bout nothing

Now, can you list every player who has had a season with 100 or more RBIs and a batting average below the Mendoza line (.200)?

Yup, in 2023. That's the entire list.

                      Jacques Rudolph - Cricket
