Even with a lot of depth, I'm constantly tweaking my roster all season.
An excessively short bench makes it easier for weaker teams to narrow the gap, as the top dogs won't have anyone they can let go of.

Like I said, there's got to be an optimal middle ground...

Trades are difficult in leagues with higher ego players. A high ego player must feel that he is screwing the other guy over in order to make a trade. Since both players must feel they are screwing the other over, it's rare to find a trade where that is the case.
(I don't mean this in a derogatory way, by the way; it's just true. We're nearly all high ego people. I have a baseball league with some guys from my college (U Chicago), which is basically 100% alpha males and a couple of alpha females, and we could not make a trade to save our lives. We offered something like Nelson Cruz + Pablo Sandoval for Ubaldo Jimenez a while back (when Ubaldo was not doing well) and couldn't get the manager to bite...

Sure; I love my league with a four player bench [and this was starting 2 QB, 4 RB, 5 WR, 2 TE, so a lot of players to back up] because it was difficult to make decisions on who to keep/etc., and there were tons of good finds available. I personally think it's a good thing that weaker teams can narrow the gap, because it makes it more fun for everyone, by the way... but as you say, there is some fun in having sleepers on the bench. That's why I wouldn't mind a 5 player bench - I think 5 is enough for real depth and sleepers and whatnot but still have enough available other players that the WW is not totally useless. After all, we're at 14 now; basically, look at the current available players - that's what would be out there for a 14 player bench, minus a few RB/WR plus a few TEs. I'd love to have players like Jason Snelling on the WW, hence a 4 player bench, but even if he's not, you'd still see decent players out there. You won't once round 16 hits.

Eh, I don't really know if that is case. I play with a lot of cocky males from my high school, who all think they could win a super bowl if they were the GM of the Panthers. We have a lot of trades in that league despite the egos. But most of the trades are made through face to face contact or phone calls, text etc. Which may be part of the trouble here.

I think the case of my team last year is a decent one (at least arguing that the bench isn't too deep) where I made a lot of poor poor drafting choices and had to go to the waiver wire and snag brandon jackson as my starting running back in week 1 when grant went down. I had to be swift though. I think if you changed the way the waiver wire works though, you'd have to change the bench depth.

I think it has something to do with it. I see some of my people in my other league every day, most once or twice a week. Makes it easier to facilitate trades, bounce trade ideas off each other.
