  • We are already pretty much dead. Wade and Garret will be gone at the end of the season, so some good will come out of this season.

And Al B. I don't think you can call Kolb captain checkdown anymore. He should start over Vick.

Well, Lions have a bye, so I'd guess the week after.

No he's definitely not captain checkdown anymore. Before the game, reports were that the Eagles were trying to showcase Kolb for a trade before the deadline on Tuesday. Now, I don't know.

One word of caution though before we go all rah rah for Kolb (or for Vick for that matter)... we've seen AJ Feeley do this... we've seen Jeff Garcia do this... and they shined without anywhere near this amount of talent around them. Andy Reid is to QB's what Shanahan is to RB's.

It would be interesting to see what happens if Desean Jackson misses time, though. Jason Avant is capable of being a #2 to Maclin, however.

        • Skins won the toss and deferred. I can't recall when I last saw an NFL team defer (if ever).

The Broncos did it this afternoon against the Jets. The Dolphins did it a few weeks ago when Braylon Edwards was being disciplined.

The issue is deferring to the Colts of all teams... a team built on getting an early lead and maintaining it.

Bears did it regularly back in the day. You know, when they had a defense.

Is it really just "defer" now? Used to be, you could opt to choose which end of the field you wanted (i.e., offense with the wind in the 1st and 4th qtr) instead of receiving. Did the NFL change that at some point?

                    • Well, according to the digest of rules:

                      Coin Toss

The toss of coin will take place within three minutes of kickoff in center of field. The toss will be called by the visiting captain before the coin is flipped. The winner may choose one of two privileges and the loser gets the other:
                      1. (a) Receive or kick
                        (b) Goal his team will defend
                      2. Immediately prior to the start of the second half, the captains of both teams must inform the officials of their respective choices. The loser of the original coin toss gets first choice.
                      Digest of Rules

This Digest of Rules of the National Football League has been prepared to aid players, fans, and members of the press, radio, and television media in their understanding of the game.
It is not meant to be a substitute for the official rule book. In any case of conflict between these explanations and the official rules, the rules always have precedence.
In order to make it easier to coordinate the information in this digest, the topics discussed generally follow the order of the rule book.

                        • Former NFL star linebacker Junior Seau drove off an embankment and was hospitalized with minor injuries Monday, less than nine hours after he was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence.

The 12-time Pro Bowler's white Cadillac SUV was found on the beach about 30 feet below the roadside, said Carlsbad police Lt. Paul Mendes. He was taken to Scripps La Jolla Hospital in San Diego.

Seau's 25-year-old, live-in girlfriend told authorities that Seau assaulted her during an argument at his Oceanside home, according to Oceanside police. She appeared to have minor injuries and did not require medical treatment.

Seau, 41, was arrested outside his home about two hours after police arrived. He wasn't home when authorities arrived but they asked him to return when he called his girlfriend.

Seau posted bail and was released from the San Diego County jail in Vista.

"At this point we think he's fine but we really don't have any comment," said Richard Doan, who answered the cell phone of Bette Hoffman, who works for Seau's foundation. "There are no injuries but he seems to be a little shaken up."

A hospital spokeswoman, Lisa Ohmstede, declined to comment on Seau's condition.

Seau was a star linebacker with the University of Southern California before going to the San Diego Chargers with the fifth pick overall in the 1990 draft. He led the Chargers to the Super Bowl following the 1994 season and remained in San Diego until being traded to the Miami Dolphins in 2003.

He left football briefly in August 2006 after 13 seasons with San Diego and three with Miami. He signed with the Patriots four days later and started 14 of the 27 games he played for them over two seasons. He retired after the 2007 season, then came out of retirement for the final four games in 2008 before retiring after that season. Seau played seven regular-season games in 2009, all as a backup, and made 15 tackles.

                            • Wow I guess after having all those players concussed this week, things are going crazy... The NFL says they'll suspend players for the hits but end up only giving out fines, James Harrison is saying he's retiring, Brandon Meriweather is apologizing for his hits, the NFL put up the Harrison/Massaquoi hit picture as available for sale then quickly pulled it and called it a mistake...

Oh and refs apparently have been asking coaches to call timeouts for a while now to ensure the appropriate number of commercial breaks.

                              The NFL is a circus.
