  • Sitting out 4 years sure doesn't say he'll put up Tomlinson numbers. I wasn't convinced that LT was done. I'm more convinced that 4 years will have affected Barber.
It's a midlife crisis. Maybe he shot his wad gambling. Who knows? If someone wants to sign him for a year to feed him, fine.

Ricky Williams left the NFL in 2005. He had the much-publicized return in 2007 which lasted all of one game in that nasty mud game between the Steelers and Dolphins that year. He didn't actually really play til 2008 when he rushed for 659 yards then the next year, put up 1121 rushing.

Two years without playing and Ricky was just fine.

Mike Vick (who mightaswell be an RB anyway) was out of football two years as well and he's better than ever.

Being away from the game I think is irrelevant. In fact, I think it helps these guys out by giving them time to heal up (I think TO has had much more longevity than the rest of his 1996 draft class because of his missed season with the Eagles).

The issue is age. No RB has been effective at Tiki's age. However, no RB has had as unique of a career as Tiki nor the unique circumstances of having had 4 years to recover his body.

I think if anyone's going to be able to pull this off, it's Tiki.

      • Four years of recovery doesn't keep you from the effects of aging.

The big question is, will anyone want Tiki? Clearly, he'll have to play for the veteran minimum -- if he can get a gig at all.

Any general manager would much rather have a young player with upside than a veteran with, at most, a couple years ahead of him. As you pointed out, Alby, Ricky Williams took a full year to get back into true football shape, and he was a couple years younger than Tiki. And Tiki has a reputation (fairly earned) as someone who will yap outside the locker room; not a company man. He definitely burned some bridges on his way out of the league, then made more enemies in his ill-fated broadcast/commentary career. Frankly, if Tampa Bay doesn't sign him in an effort to sell a few more tickets by pairing him with Ronde, I don't know who will.

My prediction: if Tiki Barber plays pro football in 2011, it will be in the UFL or Canada.

        • Union decertifies (no surprise) and now it goes to Judge Doty. He's ruled in player's favor on all previous issues so we'll see if he keeps to form.

They just don't trust each other. This could get ugly and take a long time.

          • Turns out the union was asking for 10 years of open books -- like that was going to happen!

Why would you say the owners don't trust the players? What could they possibly be hiding? The trust issue IMHO goes the other way. The owners have plenty to hide, and confirm it with every negotiation. Not that I would willingly give up a billion a year (iirc $700MM is the current differential), but if my taps had hot and cold running cash, I'd find a way to keep it flowing. Maybe offer them free tattoos and hair extensions?

            • Nice to see we've reached the point of open hostility, complete with accusations and recriminations.

What about free legal services for their off field activities???

                • Good idea. And if they gave them all players free limo service, most of the bad-boy stuff would never see the light of day.

                    • That kind of falls under the umbrella of bad-boy stuff. I don't know that any of it would stop an idiot from stuffing a handgun down his pants and shooting himself.

Let's get some perspective here with regards to what 'bad-boy stuff' means.

                        • So you don't think that illegally carrying a handgun is bad-boy? For a millionaire? For someone stupid enough to shoot themselves? What does it take?

After what happened to Sean Taylor and to many other football players, Plaxico had better been packing heat.

                            • That's bull****. You can hire people to take that risk for you. Just like you can hire a limo driver. If you're rocking over ten million bucks and can't figure out how to live above that kind of action, you are an idiot.

Tragedies like Sean Taylor's death do not justify carrying a concealed weapon in a nightclub.
