The problem is not that four teams might be too few; it is that four teams might be too many.

The loser of the SEC Championship Game (and, less frequently, the Big 12 Championship Game) often finishes in the top 4 (or 8, or 12, etc.); the result of that game would be completely meaningless if both squads made a championship tourney.

ONLY conference champs should be invited, period. Many non-champs make the top 4.
Gee, wasn't Michigan almost ranked second that year, very nearly making the OSU-Michigan game irrelevant anyway?

And it's too bad some of the undefeated teams don't make the top 4. Their fault for not having coerced the good BCS teams into scheduling them.

An anomaly. A lot like the anomaly in 2004, isn't it? I'm sure it can't possibly happen again.

It has to happen ever year for a four-team playoff of unbeatens to work, you idiot.

No, I was replying to Ming before I had read the entire thread. The mistake is mine.

Drake, you wouldn't happen to be Ben Kenobi's college football DL, are you? Your "reading" of Ming's posts and stance that Nebraska recruits nationally just like Notre Dame makes me wonder.

As I said earlier, the polls were manipulated to prevent that--the ends justifying the means, in that case.

The polls are ****ing terrible, but at least they can be used for good on occasion.

                    • Here are the two points Drake is resting everything on:

A four team playoff vs the current two team playoff will...

                      1) Destroy the value of the regular season and make it meaningless.
                      2) Will destroy the revenue the teams are already making.

When you strip away all of his made up crap and insults, this is what he's saying. And in looking at it this way, we can all see just how stupid he really is.

No, it isn't. Again, you read as well as Sloww does.

A playoff (save for maybe Guy's proposal) would lessen the do-or-die nature of college football's regular season and would therefore lessen interest in the regular season, leading to decreased value to TV networks and lessened TV revenues. How much a playoff lessens the importance of the regular season depends on the playoff proposal.

Here are Ming's shifting proposals, ranked from least impact on the regular season to most...

Four-teams, conference champs, unbeatens (bascially Guy's proposal, but with a fixed number of teams, therefore making it impossible) > Four-teams > Four teams, conference champs

                        • You can't even read and think about what you post... very sad.

You've been very clear about the HUGE lost of revenue and the how a 4 team playoff system will ruin the meaning of the regular season...

Maybe you should go back and read your own posts again... so you can figure out what you are saying.

Seems to me that the college football "championship" is just a popularity contest between whichever two large schools can semi-plausibly be named "best" in order to make the most revenue. I can't see how a lesser school will ever get a chance unless they get into a BCS conference or manage to play perfect all season while all the BCS schools except one step on their crank. And since 2 loss schools still get ahead of some of the undefeated teams, either seems extraordinarily implausible. Maybe the TCUs and Boises aren't good enough to be champions, too bad no one will ever know either way. Sorry, kids, you're too short to play ball.

At least in basketball everyone has a chance to win it on the court.
