  • No one watches college football on NBC. Why would you watch Notre Dame lose to Navy again when you can watch good games every week on ABC/ESPN and CBS? You act like Notre Dame's exclusive TV contract is a big deal when the exclusivity of it actually hurts its value; people want to watch good games and NBC almost never has one.

        • From Wiki:

          Broadcast rights
          [edit]
          Networks

ABC has been airing college football since acquiring the NCAA contract in 1966. Chris Schenkel and Bud Wilkinson were the number one broadcast team. Keith Jackson, its best-known college football play-by-play man, announced games from 1966 through 2005 on ABC (and for 14 years before that for various outlets), and was considered by many to be "the voice of college football." The network has contracts with most of the major BCS conferences, which leads it to broadcast most of its games regionally. ABC began airing a weekly Saturday night primetime football game in the fall of 2006, when the network's sports division converted to ESPN on ABC. Nearly all regional ABC games that air on a given Saturday are also available as part of a pay-per-view package called ESPN GamePlan, and online via ESPN 360.

NBC broadcast the Rose Bowl beginning in 1952 until the 1988 Rose Bowl when ABC took over. It had the Orange Bowl from 1965 through 1995. NBC has an exclusive contract with Notre Dame, which began in 1991. Since that time, NBC has carried nationally all of Notre Dame's home games, paying $9 million per season for broadcast rights. Even in down years, Notre Dame's ratings remain constant with that of teams from major conferences, reflecting the team's appeal. NBC is also the home of the annual "Bayou Classic" between Grambling State University and Southern University at the Louisiana Superdome. The game is well known for its Battle of the Bands between the schools at halftime.

CBS has historically aired fewer college games than the other networks, but it broadcast some important games in the 1980s, such as the classic Boston College–Miami game that ended with Doug Flutie's Hail Mary on November 23, 1984. The network aired Big East games from 1996–2000, and since 1996 has broadcast SEC games. CBS currently holds the right for the first pick for any game where an SEC team is at home, along with the rights to televise the SEC Championship game. The network also broadcasts the annual Army–Navy Game, the Navy-Notre Dame game in even-numbered years (where Navy is the home team and chooses to play in a larger stadium), the Sun Bowl, and the Gator Bowl.

FOX does not broadcast any regular season games, but has the rights to the Bowl Championship Series through the 2009 season. They cover all BCS games except for the Rose Bowl (the Sugar Bowl, Fiesta Bowl and Orange Bowl as well as the BCS Championship Game, except when the championship game is held at the Rose Bowl. In those years, the BCS final will be carried by ABC. Fox also carries the Cotton Bowl Classic.

In addition, Raycom Sports and ESPN Plus syndicate games to broadcast stations and regional sports networks on a market-by-market basis.

          • NO ONE can seriously argue that Suh would have won the Heisman if he went to ND. I don't even think DanS is that blinded.

            • What it amounts to is yet another example of ignoring the past and the complexity of cycles.
Broadcast rights change. Football programs aren't dynasties forever. Eventually, they have to re-tool.

We don't know what's possible. Don't know that they would ever give it to a defense-only player (now that we're in the platoon era). They very rarely even give it to outstanding wide receivers. ND was able to promote successfully a deserving WR for the award and had another place second, so I wouldn't totally rule out the possibility, however.

I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. • Holy **** Dan.

You mean he would've been more likely to win the Heisman on a 6-6 team than on a Top 25 9-4 team?

                    • By all means. Suh would have made ND an undefeated team this year. I have to believe that he was worth at least 7 points a game this year. Hence the Heisman.

It would take a lot more than one great player to rescue Notre Dame's defense. Their talent level is far below Nebraska's.

                        • You don't agree that Suh was worth 7 points a game? ND defense was woeful in precisely the area that Suh was greatest.

                          • Of course not. One defensive lineman, no matter how good, can be neutralized without any talent around him to help.

                            • If that's what you think, then Suh didn't deserve the Heisman. Do you think somebody like Bradford is worth 7 points?

Go watch the Heisman telecast again and see how often the nominated players say that the Heisman is a "team award". They're absolutely right, as none of them would've been there without a great team around them.
