  • Texas Big Ten expansion rumors swirl around internet

Reports have emerged about Big Ten officials meeting with Texas in order to include them in conference

    Jon Graef

The sports world is atwitter (in both the denotative and new media senses of the word) about the latest rumors surrounding the Texas Longhorns and the Big Ten. According to the Lawrence Journal-World, Texas and the Big Ten conference have been engaging in “preliminary exchanges.” Meaning what, exactly? No one quite knows, exactly, but everyone is sure of two things: 1. There have been exchanges and 2. Said exchanges were preliminary.

What’s the significance of Texas and the Big Ten having an exchange, preliminary or otherwise? Here it is: Any expansion of the Big Ten would be the first of its kind since the Big Ten went to 11 teams in 1991. So the eleventh team in the Big Ten is now old enough to purchase cigarettes and porn, to put it another way. Also worth noting: If Texas goes to the Big Ten, then cable revenue is bound to grow by leaps and bounds. As Tom Keegan of the Journal-World puts it: “Getting TV sets in the massive state of Texas tuned to the Big Ten Network would qualify as a home run for the Big Ten.”

    • Texas is a no-brainer for the Big Ten if they're actually willing to join. Here's a good bit of analysis that shows why Texas is an even better choice for the Big Ten than Notre Dame...

The Big Ten has sent college conferences across America into a tizzy with its announcement that it will examine the possibility of expanding. Of course, the announcement was really a non-announceme…

edit: If Texas does go to the Big Ten, I think the big winner is the SEC. What's to stop them from grabbing OU and A&M when the Big 12 shatters?

      • Texas would be such a HUGE get for the Big 101112. And supposedly, the financial side is what's driving the talk. Even with the Big 10's "equal shares" revenue approach, the Horns would stand to make a minimum of $10million more per annum just by joining. Plus the Big 101112 gets 12 teams, meaning divisions and a conf. championship. Which means even more millions.

The local Chicago sports media are wetting themselves at the mere thought.

It will never happen. NEVER happen.

            • Sloww is delusional; Texas already tried to get into the Big Ten once (after the SWC collapsed) and it wouldn't surprise me at all to see them join now. I think the biggest thing holding them back will be political forces in Texas preventing such a move.

              • You point out a reason immediately after insulting me; but I'm the one that's delusional.

                  • If the Big Ten can really snag Texas or Nebraska, why not just take both and add Oklahoma to the mix to make the greatest conference in the history of college football?

This idea is completely insane and 99% sure to not happen, but I must admit that it gave me a hard-on nonetheless.

                      • Hmmm... the new Big 14 could be challenged by a new Pac 14: add Colorado, Utah, BYU, and TCU or Boise State.

We'd have three mega power conferences, with three other conferences that might occasionally make some noise (ACC, Big East, the remnants of the Big 12).

                        • One day later, I'm still completely turned-on by the idea of Nebraska-Penn State, Michigan-Oklahoma and Ohio State-Texas all happening on the same day.

                          • On a side note, a 16-team expansion of the Big Ten with Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas would look totally awesome on the map. It makes the Big Ten look like its got the SEC surrounded and is about to finish it off, in good-ole Civil War fashion.

                            edit: Visual evidence...

                            • What would Nebraska offer? Makes more sense to ask Pitt to join.

Of course, Texas would be huge.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Pitt offers literally nothing to the Big Ten.
