  • NHL Salary Cap League

Some friends and I have our 4th annual Sporting News salary cap hockey league going. We're looking for more people to join to make it more interesting.

It's much different from Yahoo and also lower maintenance. In brief, you pick 7 players (C, W, W, D, D, Util, G) with $30M salary. The player's values are determined by their popularity and are updated daily once the season starts. The more popular a player is, the more money they're worth. So this becomes a balancing act -- how much bang for your buck can you get?

Another fun aspect is you can treat it like investing in stocks. You pick a player you consider to be undervalued, and as their stock increases (if they play well, they get traded for, increasing their value) you monitor and decide to keep or sell. This way you increase your salary available, I usually have 40M or so by the end to invest...more salary means you can pay better players.

So there's more dimensions than Yahoo. There's more stats, weighted by points. Hits count, for instance. The scoring point system is detailed under League Settings.

Every week, you're given two trade credits. You can save them up if you like your team, or use them to swap players. This is a Basic league, meaning there's no way to get more (in the Pro league, you can spend real $ to get trades -- I don't like that. This is 100% free and fair.)

Also, quite obviously, unlike Yahoo any team can pick any player, as long as you can afford them. There's not only one player in the entire league. Every team could have Crosby if they wanted to spend their money that way.

There are two "seasons" every NHL season: Part 1 is the first half, Part 2 is the second half. This means if you screw up the first part (learning experience), you can start fresh in Part 2.

I'd be happy to entertain more questions. It's a lot of fun and forces you to think a bit differently and encourages you to locate sleeper picks.

    The league is here: http://hockey.sportingnews.com/fanta...&team=10227582

    FAQ is here: http://www.sportingnews.com/games/ho...s/game_faq.php

Can sign up any time before the season starts, which is in a few weeks. First picks should be in by then.

Does the salary cap affect you throughout the season, or only when you first choose? It seems very unfair that you can choose a side that fits the cap at the beginning of the season, but have to get rid of some of them when they start to do well and their ratings (and salary) increase(s).

It always affects you. It's not so much a cap (a misnomer), but a starting salary/budget. If you make wise investments with players who increase in value, you can then sell them and pocket the money to buy more expensive players.

It's a stock market-meets-fantasy sports type thing. I find it awesome. Very different.

How do you win-- Is it most points or is there soem value for getting the highest value team. If the former, I assume getting the best team for the budget would win. If the latter you could pick up a bunch of cheap folks that go up in value---

Hmm I anticipate that you say that points win but it might be worthwhile to pick up some cheap folks early to increase your bankroll enough to buy all the best performers

Most points win in the league. There's also global rankings if that sort of thing tickles your fancy (I like watching my standing change nightly).

Salary is just a means to points. The best investments are not just guys who put out points, but are undervalued -- eg, sleeper picks are a very, very good thing. This will not only give you points, but increase your team value. You can leverage this value to buy more expensive players (eg, Ovechkin and Crosby on the same team if possible) if you so choose.

But yeah, you've basically got it. It's a balancing act. Build the most potent team you can for the $30M, but keep an eye on undervalued players or players you expect to increase in value also.

For example, a couple years ago Paul Stastny was my money boy. I picked him up in the first month of the season at $700K or so and by the end of the season he was closer to $6M. And he put up tons of points.

Why do leanne and Moosely have two teams each?

BTW, you should still be able to change it to disallow trades, I could in my BBL league anyway... it did take some doing to get it to stick. I like SN's concept [stock market] but their execution (particularly technically) is crap.

              Moosely is my brother.

It's tradition. They each field one real and one joke team based on a theme. Their joke teams compete with eachother for fun.

Leanne's joke team is a Calgary homer team...all players born and raised in Calgary, or prior Flame fan favourites (eg, Kobasew).

My brother's joke team is a team full of notorious douchebag players (Avery, Emery, Burrows, etc).

There's no option to change it in hockey from what I see. I can only see the option. I created the league twice and each time said no to purchasing additional trades, but it ignored the option

It's quite a thrill to nab a sleeper pick in Sporting News and see him start putting up the points. You get increased value and lots of points out of it (TSNP). I love looking at the scoresheet and seeing those names.

Interesting concept. I'm gonna sleep on it, don't know if I'll consistently put the effort in.

It doesn't need consistent effort, per se. Ideally you would make 1-2 trades per week at most, but others leave it for weeks at a time and let the trades build up.

That's a feature to guarantee I can win.

                            Seriously though, why not?

I dunno. I click on the little green plus sign next to a player, and **** all happens.
