  • The Ashes - Cricket

This is perhaps the most time honoured rivalry ever since a team of upstart colonists beat the mother land and as a trophy, or so the legend goes, they burnt the bails of the wicket and the legend has grown ever since.

This is the trophy we are both fighting for. But since it is so delicate, it always stayed in England and the MCC Museum.

And here is a picture of the Captain who will be holding it up at the end of the current series.

The fragility is the MCC's excuse for hanging onto it regardless. I'm surprised the same excuse hasn't been tried on the Elgin Marbles.

The fragility of our bowling attack is our excuse for gifting it to the Aussies usually. Hopefully that will change this year, but I'm sure the little fella with the urn above has other plans. Roll on Wednesday! (Even if it's a stupid day to start a Test, and the fact that Old Trafford has been denied a Test this year is mindboggling. But it's all about the cricket from here on in. )

Seeing as Old Trafford tests are usually rained-out, leaving it off the calendar seems completely sensible to me.

Maybe, but Punter will always be known as "the bloke who lost the Ashes".

Anyone really pleased with their side's performance today? England amassed a fair total for the notoriously low-scoring first innings of a test series, but have already lost too many wickets to make a commanding total, and the Aussie bowlers haven't shone either. But it sets up tomorrow, and the rest of the match, very nicely.

The British media will make a fuss about Pietersen giving away his wicket, but at least he made a fair score, even if it wasn't the score he is capable of. Had he done that at only 6 runs then it'd be right to berate him, but if the game runs away from England (and Wales) then I fear the blame will be laid squarely at his door.

Impressive innings from Katich and Punter. Re the Aussies taking control, or could they be in for a surprise with the arrival of the new ball tomorrow morning?

Decent innings so far from the visitors, but it looks like it'll rain for most of tomorrow so the first test should probably end in a draw...

England should be happy with a draw if the weather gives it to them.

As has the England team...It's not over yet, given the impressive displays by the bowlers in the first innings with the bat, but given how far away CoP is, the scarce likelihood of more rain, and the increasing likelihood of Collie wobbling to leave the tail without a leader, it looks to be another Aussie success after the car racing.

Can you edit the thread title please c_h? If someone doesn't know what sport the Ashes involves then they don't deserve to read the thread.

Colly has been immense. Something like 25 overs left, England 3 wickets in hand?
