  • The NHL still has a long way to go...

It's obvious that the American public still has little interest in Hockey.

With Little Competition, NHL Fails To Score
by Wayne Friedman, Yesterday, 6:06 PM

On a night when the broadcast networks were heavily into repeats, fresh programming via NBC's "NHL Stanley Cup Finals" wasn't even the top-rated show.

NBC's Sunday night hockey finals -- game two -- only got to a Nielsen preliminary 2.4 rating/6 share among 18-49 viewers and 5 million viewers. The best show of the night was Fox's "Family Guy" repeat, which ran against hockey at 9 p.m. and earned a 2.7/7.
It's pretty sad that a rerun of "Family Guy" got better ratings.

Hockey is too fast for Americans.

Disband all of the American teams.

It's easy to "improve" when you have sunk soooooooooooooooooo low.
A championship series being outwatched by a rerun of a cartoon pretty much says it all

            Why?

It's not like it would be an event that large numbers of people would plan around viewing.

I'm impressed it was that close to the top rating.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I thought two U.S. teams were in the finals.

Yeah, imagine what the ratings (in the US) would be if there were two Canadian teams in the finals.

Tuberski's chart doesn't go far enough back, but that happened in both '89 and '86 (both Calgary versus Montreal) I wonder what kind of ratings there were then in the US?

Not sure it will ever happen again though

An exciting finals so far... but I guess the US doesn't think so...

TV ratings for Stanley Cup Game 6 down from 2008
Associated Press, 06.11.09, 10:19 AM EDT

NEW YORK -- The Stanley Cup finals are going to a Game 7 for the first time since 2006, giving the series a chance to build on strong television ratings.

NBC said Wednesday that the Pittsburgh Penguins' 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in Game 6 on Tuesday night earned a 4.1 overnight rating and 7 share. That's down 7 percent from the 4.4 for last year's Game 6, when the Red Wings clinched the title. Unlike in 2008, this season's game went up against the NBA finals.
