  • NHL Salary Cap League

    Yarr!

Some friends and I have our 3rd annual Sporting News salary cap hockey league going. We're looking for more people to join to make it more interesting.

It's much different from Yahoo and also lower maintenance. In brief, you pick 7 players (C, W, W, D, D, Util, G) with $30M salary. The player's values are determined by their popularity and are updated daily once the season starts. The more popular a player is, the more money they're worth. So this becomes a balancing act -- how much bang for your buck can you get?

Another fun aspect is you can treat it like investing in stocks. You pick a player you consider to be undervalued, and as their stock increases (if they play well, they get traded for, increasing their value) you monitor and decide to keep or sell. This way you increase your salary available, I usually have 40M or so by the end to invest...more salary means you can pay better players.

So there's more dimensions than Yahoo. There's more stats, weighted by points. Hits count, for instance. The scoring point system is here: http://fantasygames.sportingnews.com...s.html#scoring

Every week, you're given two trade credits. You can save them up if you like your team, or use them to swap players. This is a Basic league, meaning there's no way to get more (in the Pro league, you can spend real $ to get trades -- I don't like that. This is 100% free and fair.)

Also, quite obviously, unlike Yahoo any team can pick any player, as long as you can afford them. There's not only one player in the entire league. Every team could have Crosby if they wanted to spend their money that way.

There are two "seasons" every NHL season: Part 1 is the first half, Part 2 is the second half. This means if you screw up the first part (learning experience), you can start fresh in Part 2.

I'd be happy to entertain more questions. It's a lot of fun and forces you to think a bit differently and encourages you to locate sleeper picks.

Oh yeah, and only join the league if you're genuinely intending to play. Last year (no names!) we had a couple people joined who then didn't even fill out a team.

So if I understand you correctly, if I picked my team at the start of the season and was happy with my picks, I wouldn't technically have to do anything again all year?

(main reason I ask is that I am not sure it is a good idea for me to have 2 teams on the go that I have to actively manage, it is definitely a bad idea to have 3 as I am bound to forget 1 at least).

Yes. You can pick your guys and never touch. You wouldn't do too well, but you can do it. You can also only adjust it once per month and do well.

Honestly, I'm a very active sporting news pool manager and that means I spent 5 minutes a week (when I get my 2 trades every week) to make 1 or 2 trades to try to maximize player value.

The sporting news leagues are very low maintenance compared to Yahoo.

In addition to the ranking in the league, you also get info on where you rank globally with the team. Which is cool.

I've been in the top 100 briefly.

Okay, here's another one (you did ask for questions ) if I log on and do my picks today (September 24), I will likely be changing them before season start (October 04), but I don't want anyone to see my sleeper picks.....will everyone be able to see the team I have picked before the season starts? (basically I just want to pick and change picks to see what 30 million looks like in my lineup before settling on a "team")

You cannot see anyone else's roster til the regular season starts. You also have unlimited trades until the season starts.

When the season does start, you can see other people's rosters as they were to start the day. You do not see any changes they make in the day until the morning the next day.

Also, you should be aware that there's two fun teams in this league. Your goal is to be better than them.

"Team Tim Thomas" is full of players named only "Tim" or "Thomas"/"Tom".

"The Del Boca Vista Dolphins" is full of players aged 38 or older only. The name is a reference to the Seinfeld retirement home, if you didn't know.

Oh Asher!! You can name me. IIRC I picked one player to see how it worked and then decided not to play. I never thought it would keep me in the league. I even think I tried once to delete my "team".

Good to be able to see the other teams and compare to mine. I am not unhappy with how I picked...now to see if it works out to my benefit. (I think I picked at least one player that Asher will laugh at, maybe even two! ).

Hopefully these freebie fantasy drafts have helped me prepare for this years draft that I am on my way to. I have finished 1st loser for the last three years running, and would like to break that trend (first loser = the top team not to be in the money ).

I'd already made a gaffe in this league -- I should've loaded up more on Europe-playing players to get the extra week's points out of it. You get 2 trades a week, so I should've had 2 Pittsburgh or NYR players on my roster I'd ditch before today.
