Because your continued existence in the pool is dependent on the result of the upcoming week. It's programmed to check for (thisweek=correct) before the next week is revealed.

I understand the programming
I just would prefer to be able to enter my picks in the future. If i'm not eligible anymore, just stop counting my picks at that point ... 
But, if I go on vacation for a week, i'm not able to put my picks in ahead of time ...<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.
