One of the many differences is that in Cricket the ball pitches on the ground before the batsman hits it, allowing for things like spin and movement off the seam of the ball. Bowlers can also make the ball swing in the air by polishing one side and affecting the aerodynamics.

Another difference is the set of three stumps in the ground that the bowler can try to hit, and that the batsman must defend. The 'death-rattle' clatter of these stumps when the bowler succeeds in hitting them is one of the best sounds in sport. Unless you're the batsman, of course.

He scampered a single and came back for the overthrow when Graeme Swann's shy at the stumps was not backed up.
