  • Phoning in your resignation: Two words.

    Pure class.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

    • I guess I'm just confused as to how Michigan viewed English's progression. Was he being groomed for landing a head coaching job at a smaller school? Was he being groomed to take over the reins as Michigan HC?

NB: I have no direct knowledge of him. Just heard that Michigan thought well of him. Of course, I have my opinions about his relative strengths, but only indirectly.

          Bradford is a true freshman?

Don't really understand what happened with McCoy this year. I guess you give him a Mulligan, considering his stellar freshman year.

          • Redshirt Frosh.

For Colt it may have been just a soph slump or maybe defenses figured him out. Won't know until next season.

            • English have never been a head coach, has only been a coordinator for a couple seasons, and his defense remains vulnerable to spread offenses, the bane of Big Blue for a decade now. I think he's a pretty good coach, and is apparently a great recruiter, but I'm not sure he's ready.

But if it were a choice between him and Debord? Holy ****, sign English up yesterday.

              • Rumors say that Jeff Tedford from Cal is being looked at by Michigan.

                • Hmm, that might be a nice choice. As long as he's learned how not to fold under pressure...

                  • Why would Tedford want to make that move? The USC fans seem to think that once their coaching position opens up, that will be Tedford's spot.

                    • Maybe he wants to coach for the better team

Seriously, no idea Would be harder for recruiting also, wouldn't it, given he knowns the california recruiting as it is... Maybe Cal has some sort of noncompete agreement recruiting-wise?

                      • I view the recruiting in the two places as similar. You have regional competition (USC, ND), but are fairly strong in your state or area of the state. You branch out and are strong in other areas not in your state too (Pacific NW, Northern Ohio & Eastern Pennsylvania). Maybe you do a little bit of national recruiting as well.

                        • Well, yes, but there's one significant difference...

At Cal, he's presumably familiar with, and visited, most of the California recruits, as well as the HS coaches at the top area schools. So moving to USC would be simple - same contacts. At UM, he'd have to start anew largely, though i'm sure he'd still recruit a bit in California.

                          • Agreed. Again, no easily identifiable reason to move.

                            • I heard that he wants Cal to improve their facilities, which they haven't done. U-M is in the process (stadium upgrade, new indoor practice facility).

According to Wiki he makes base $3.3M, so maybe that's more than our seemingly cheapskate AD wants to pay.
