    • BYU played a lousy 6-5 Michigan and only won 24-17. If they had played a better team, I don't think they would have won.

To be fair, Bosco was playing injured. And with those Lavell Edwards' systems, it was all about the QB.

          • Can't put up big numbers while injured?

His knee and ankle got really banged up in the 1st Q, but came back, played through the pain and led his team to victory. Knowing the BYU offense, those numbers are an average day .

            His injuries that day:

Later, Pratley would say, "He has a partial medial collateral tear in the knee, and a Grade 2 ankle sprain. Neither will require surgery, but they hurt like hell. He also may have a fractured rib on the right side."

            I'd think that's pretty bad, don't you?

            • I was four at the time ... not sure why my source indicated Steve Young but oh well I was not familiar with that team except for being aware they won it (I grew up in the southwest in WAC and Big West territory), but was more familiar with Detmer's Cougars.

I'd only buy that argument if Hawaii had played just one first-division team from a major conference. The fact that Boise State and Washington were as good as it got for the Warriors? Uh-uh, sorry. No screwjob.

                • I see your point, reis. If everyone else hadn't fumbled their chances, I would not be in Hawai'i's corner.

But let's not forget that (1) they beat a decent Arizona State team in a bowl game last year, and (2) they are trying their best to play a decent schedule. But no one will play them.
--Michigan declined to play them in the season opener and replaced them with Appalachian State. And we all know how that turned out.
--Michigan State was actually on the schedule, but decided to fork over $250K to get out of the contract. And forego the $500K they would have gotten from ESPN.
--Hawaii tried to replace the Spartans with USC, which had an opening, and got turned down. (To be fair, USC has played them in the past, and has scheduled them for 2010.)
--Hawai'i routinely offers cash incentives to bring teams out to play them. We're talking $250-750K.

So they're doing everything they can. Fact is, they played the toughest schedule they could and won every game -- but The Man is keeping them Down! It's time for Revolution, Baby!

                  • Yep, -Jrabbit, teams like Hawai'i, Boise State, Fresno State, etc. Smaller western teams that are dangerous, but are still seen as lower bracket scare the bejeesus out of the "big" schools. It's been hard as Hell to get great OOC conference games for them.

                    • And the same schools that refuse to play them in-season are the very ones who control the BCS. It's all an evil plot!

                      Down with the BCS!

                      • Boise State was a great victory for Hawai'i, heck, how many top 25 teams did OSU beat? One at end of season ranks? Admittedly some of those Hawai'i wins are in conference creampuffs, but even then some of those teams have some quality (NMSU, for example, in general an awful football school, has a great QB and WR tandem this year that could see 7th round draft action or undrafted free agent a la Tony Romo; they nearly beat Auburn AT Auburn, were leading in the 2nd half IIRC, until they lost it in the second half; they were blown out by both Boise State and Hawai'i, who could easily have let their guards up and allowed this offensively capable team to beat them, a la arkansas-lsu or stanford-usc).

I think Hawai'i certainly deserves the shot this year, but the BCS was essentially made to ensure they got no shot at it. Sorry, WAC ... though they're making a case for including the WAC in it (though that means either one more bowl or one less wild card slot...)
