Raiders and Russell Finally Agree
Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the Oakland Raiders have reached an agreement in principle with unsigned first-round pick QB JaMarcus Russell. Russell will officially sign a six-year year contract Tuesday, Sept. 11. He should be able to take part in practice Wednesday, Sept. 12. The contract has a maximum value of at least $61 million and includes about $31 to $32 million in guarantees.Apolyton's Grim Reaper 2008, 2010 & 2011

OUCH!!
Browns starting quarterback Charlie Frye was traded to Seattle for a sixth-round draft pick on Tuesday.
The Cleveland Browns have agreed to trade starting quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks. Terms of the deal have yet to be made public.
Frye, who won an open competition over Derek Anderson during the preseason for the starting job, didn't last a single game as the Browns' 2007 starter. He was yanked with 6:34 remaining in the second quarter of the Steelers' 34-7 rout of the Browns. By then, he had gone 4-of-10 for 34 yards, thrown an interception and been sacked five times for a quarterback rating of 10.0.
Looks like Brady is going to be the starter sooner than later, eh?“I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

He looked pretty good in the preseason game I saw him in.

FWIW Quinn looked good against the Lions' scrubs in preseason.
Frye's trade doesn't change much (as long as the other guy doesn't get hurt). Since Quinn held out, he's not going to start for a few weeks. Maybe in week 8 after their bye? Or against Miami in week 6. Probably not against Baltimore or NE before that. Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety. - Ben Franklin

Sources: Goodell determines Pats broke rules by taping Jets' signals

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, according to league sources.
NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.
Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.
The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.
The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.
Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.
The league refused comment but did confirm Monday that they were reviewing a possible violation by the Patriots.

Well, admittedly, it was easy to figure out the Jets' signals since Mangini only sent in the one 'play dead' sign all day.
Please. Every team in the league does some variation of this. NE just didn't bother to hide it. Or did you think coaches had been hiding their mouths behind clipboards for years because they thought their voices would carry? It's only a big deal because everybody wants to take shots at the Pats these days."In the beginning was the Word. Then came the ******* word processor." -Dan Simmons, Hyperion

The loss of a couple draft picks, unless it is a number 1 or 2 is pretty weak punishment. If the penalty is draft picks, it should be the 1 and 2, or the 1 for the next 2 years or something. IMHO, this is a more serious offense than tampering with a soon-to-be free agent or coach, since it directly implicates the play on the field.
Since there's no way there would be a game forfeiture penalty (or a postseason ban ), I'd rather see something more fun like a salary cap of 5m less than other teams for 2 years, or 1 less home game next year. (send them to europe or japan or mexico for a game)

So, given that this is by all reports a widespread practice, on what basis would you think there should be heavy penalties?
If they come down too hard NE should just release a list of the people who are doing it for the other teams...I'm sure they're known (as this guy apparently was.)"In the beginning was the Word. Then came the ******* word processor." -Dan Simmons, Hyperion
