(In fact this is the point of the backup, that and having somebody in case the regular guy gets hurt and/or sucks.)
Basically you can either draft "solid medium performers" for backups - ie, people who aren't good enough to start, and you know that, but they'll play well enough in case of a bye week or an injury; or you can draft "risk/reward" picks, which are players who aren't expected to play well but have some potential to really shine and possibly even start if they have a great season.
Rookies usually fall in the latter category (except surefire picks like Calvin Johnson or Marshawn Lynch), and long-time veterans with safe jobs usually fall in the former category (like Trent Green or Ahman Green).
It's best to draft a mixture of the two, though the risk/reward you can go more for if the risk is not as high.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Warrick Dunn last week underwent surgery for a herniated disc and is expected to 3-6 weeks.
And the hits just keep on coming for the Falcons. Dunn wasn't fully recovered from a prior shoulder surgery, and this puts his readiness for the season in doubt. Really, his football future is in question and he's now more of a late-round fantasy pick. This gives Jerious Norwood a chance to take hold of the starting job with Dunn clearly behind him.
