I said Rooney was good at club level because he has a colleague he gels with. He might gel with Cesc, for all I know, and if my team could afford taking risks on £30m players I'd probably say yes. Rooney is a great finisher and that's exactly what my lot need.

Thing is, he's out of our budget. End of.

Gerrard has been playing poorly on the right this season. Liverpool run of form over the Winter coincided with his switch into the center of the park after Sissoko's injury. Even then, he hasn't been as exciting or consistent in the center of the pitch as he has been in recent seasons.

Ireland 1 - 0 Slovakia

Best Irish performance I've seen since Mick McCarthy managed the national side (departed in 2002). Great attacking play in the first half - haven't seen Duff play like that in a long time, shame he isn't regularly making use of what is probably the best dribbling ability in the Premiership. Unnessacerally ceded possession in the second half allowing Slovakia to attack but the defensive display was very impressive (but far from perfect).

Staunton's squad selection is still a worry and some of his team selections are bizarre (Finnan on the left, O'Shea on the right?) but the team has good young players (McShane, Ireland, the Reading trio of Doyle, Long, and Hunt) and, more importantly, the team tried to play rather than just showing up - something they haven't seemed to do in years.

It's just ridiculous taking anything about how England should play in the future from a game against Andorra. If we play Brazil or Italy or anyone good the game will be totally different.
