If that's so then why did they agree to keep doing it?
They don't pay a thing for the rights to air, it's a profit sharing agreement.

While that is true... you have to consider what they "could" be making if they were running something else that could pull better ratings than the crappy ratings they are getting for the NHL They are "lossing" money because of this contract.

Methinks you don't understand NBC just agreed to a new deal with the NHL to continue...
Methinks if NBC was losing money on this they wouldn't do such a thing...
Methinks you think you know everything about the media but methinks it is clear you do not...

Guess there's something to be said for small victories.
NBC reports Sunday's Red Wings-Avalanche game drew 1.3 in the national overnight ratings. That's low, but it's still an 8% increase over last season.
That game was going against some pretty stiff competition Sunday afternoon: the Buick Invitational on CBS and the Lakers-Spurs game going into overtime on ABC.
The golf drew a 5.5 rating and the NBA a 3.0.
The hockey game's best rating came in the Detroit area, which is about as surprising as Tiger Woods winning the Buick.
The Wings-Avs drew a 6.5 here, compared to a 5.1 for the golf and a 3.3 for the NBA.
NBC's fighting an uphill battle with the NHL, for sure, but it's really doing a great job. The behind-the-glass reporters, the on-the-rink studio show, the announcing talent -- all good moves while remaining true to the game.
But after the NHL's week in the spotlight, such as it was, here are a few of our suggestions for NBC and the league:
• We're convinced NBC has something in Brett Hull, but they need to unleash him. The "rants" and point-counterpoint all seem a little too polished and prepared. Just let him talk. And maybe sub in Pierre Maguire for his debate opponent.
• Get John Davidson back in the booth. You have to be a little concerned about the job he's doing with the Blues.
• If Sidney Crosby's going to be a credible face of the new NHL, he needs a celebrity girlfriend, À la Tom Brady. Who's in Sid's age bracket? Hilary Duff?
• Or maybe Sid could play Eva Longoria's love interest on "Desperate Housewives." He's about the right age for that, too.
• Fix the schedule instead of the jerseys.
• Keep the All-Star stuff on Tuesday-Wednesday on Versus. Really, the fewer people who see that, the better.
• Make it a contact sport again.

Methinks you didn't bother to actually understand what you posted. Beach volleyball and poker do better ratings than the NHL and make more money.
NBC is "betting" that hockey will some day be big time again. They are willing to suffer the low profits (they could be making a ton more running just about ANYTHING else during that time) in hopes that it will pay off in the future. Even at the marginal increases of 8% a year, they are going to have to wait a very long time
You still need to explain to me how making a profit = "lossing (sic) tons of money"

Simple TV economics... The money they are making from their NHL contract is FAR less than they could be making if they ran just about anything else during that time. So while they are "making a profit", they could be making a much bigger profit if they didn't run it... therefore, they are lossing a ton of money because of it.
Show me NBC's ratings on saturdays pre-December, then.

Asher, you're out of your depth. Stick to things you know.
Ming's made it clear he doesn't follow hockey nor its media relations, so I think I'm in the clear now.
Look at NBC's ratings on Saturday afternoons in December pre-hockey, compare them to now.
Ming made a ridiculous statement "lossing tons of money" on hockey, apparently oblivious to the fact that they are making money on it, then tried to correct it by saying the opportunity cost means they are losing out on potential money = "lossing tons of money". Which still doesn't make sense, which is why I've asked him to back it up.
He won't, because he can't. And you tell me to stick to things I know. Ming sticks to things he knows and he still gets it wrong.
Advertisers.

Were people out of their league when they called out Ming's numbers on Heroes being doomed?
