It was these same "informed" idiots at ESPN, do I need to name names, that said that Carolina was the best team before the start of the season. Crap. All they are good at is predicting history, foretelling the past, and looking like fools.

Interesting first half. Grossman hasn't been great, but hasn't given away his job either. Meanwhile, the defense gives up two long drives.

Missed FG at the half by the Rams, so it's Bears by one at the break. Pretty funny that the two highest scoring kickers in the game both miss a FG in the first half.

Good game so far.

Over at FFZ, our buddy Ben Kenobi wondered how the Bears crappy offense could be so highly rated -- 4th in the league at 26.5/game going into tonight. So I did a little research.

The answer is: the Bears exceptional defense and special teams make the offense look good, both by scoring points directly and by giving the offense a short field.

Going through game by game, I counted all direct points (returns of punts, INTs and fumbles for TDs, a safety) from the defense and special teams, plus offensive points from (a) TD drives of less than 50 yds or (b) FGs from drives of less than 20 yds.

The total is 154 points, or 12.8 per game. So, nearly half the points on the scoreboard for the Bears are directly attributable to defense and special teams.

Here's the breakdown:
Short-field TD drives (13) = 91 points
Punt returns (3) = 21 points
Fumble returns (2) = 14
Short-field FG drives (4) = 12 points
Interception return (1) = 7 points
Missed FG attempt return (1) = 7 points
Safety (1) = 2 points

Breaking that down further,
Offense =13 TDs and 4 FGs owing to short fields (103 points)
Defense = 3 TDs and a safety for 23 points
Special teams = 4 TDs for 28 points

Not to mention two TD kickoff returns for Devin Hester tonight...
