    • God you're an *******.

Dude, over the last 4 days I've slept a total of 11 hours.

In the other 85 available hours I've:

      written a paper
read a review paper to extend my knowledge of markov chain monte carlos
      read 100 pages of a C++ book
read 80 pages of a stochastic calculus book
read a review paper on stochastic differential equations

Assholishness is all I have left right now. Plus I'm really good at it.

First off, that's nuts. If I get 11 hours over TWO days I'm a zombie. I'm so screwed if we have a kid...

          Second, I DanSed you.

Note, however, the that was included in the original.

            • 2 hours of that sleep time was with my head on my desk in my office. It was glorious.

                        • Ok, fellas, the Zaku seems to have had enough (he will, no doubt, claim that he was unfairly attacked by a bunch of libruls).

Let's solve the illegal immigration issue. Proposals? I lean toward the libertarian approach here: free movement of capital *and* labor. I do worry about short-term disruption, though, right at first. On the plus side, it gets people properly "on the grid" so to speak.

KH - your position was based around the above, but with an entry fee (with loans available, and deportation for defaulting on the loan) right? I recall you being unmoved by worries of disruption.

AFAIK, many illegals presently pay various shady folks to smuggle them in anyway. So many of them are ponying up some sort of entry fee: it's just that the US government doesn't get it.

                          • My actual position is the free movement of goods, information, capital and people, with the caveat that public safety concerns do justify controlling the movement of known criminals, weapons, drugs etc across international borders.

If we're going to live with significant impediments to immigration to the US then I would rather do so on a monetary basis rather than on the current command economyish basis (where the government decides what types of labour would be most beneficial for the economy to import).

It was also a bit of a tongue in cheek suggestion, as the same people who don't believe in economic central planning generally seem to be fine with it when it's applied to the international labour market. But it would honestly be infinitely preferable to the immigration system even in countries with more sane systems than that of the US.

                            • Counterargument (Paulite version):

Our welfare state, such as it is, means that it might be better for (some) Mexicans to come here and be unemployed than stay in Mexico and work. Without an entry fee to hedge against this, we're setting ourselves up to be fleeced.

Drugs are just goods though. Unless it's Mexican weed. That ****'s disgusting.
