  • Farewell (an "I'm Leaving Forever" thread)

This will be the last OT thread I participate in here. Just wanted to say g’bye to everyone. I’ve enjoyed posting here over the years, and I hope that my contributions helped the site in some small way.

The reasons for the departure are many, but in a nutshell it came down to choosing whether to help a new site find its footing, or trying to help battle the inertia of an existing site to coax the changes needed for its long term health. In the end, I saw one as being more likely to succeed than the other…perhaps I’ve guessed wrong. I don’t yet know.

In any case, I wish ‘poly and the new owners well, and like to think that I’ve made a number of friends here. I know it’s a subjective thing, but increasingly, the site is shedding its community feel for a hostile one, starting in the OT but more and more those attitudes are rippling out and slowly changing the character of the On Topic sections, such that even if we got loads of new content tomorrow, I’m not sure how effective it would be at retaining new posters.

That’s going to be hard to change, because as the new owners have no doubt discovered, *any* attempt at change is met with suspicion and a fair amount of hostility.

Anyway, I’ve no doubt that the road will be a long one, and wish the new owners luck.

Vel, this is quite a jump.

I think this is quite a shame, but it is somewhat understandable. Good luck.

Sorry to see you go. Hopefully the new site doesn't end up the way the other half dozen failed/deserted Civ sites have. Honestly I just don't see enough room for three major civ sites but maybe the release of Civ5 (still 1-2 years away) will create enough new users to make that possible.

That would seem to point toward, yes.

            Hey Curt!

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm a Mod, yes, but only in the Candle'Bre section, so my disappearance isn't going to throw the new administration into disarray.

Aside from posting in this thread, I'm working in the Candle'Bre section to archive the materials there so if the admins wish to shut it down, they will certainly be able to.

Good luck with the work on Civ content, Vel. I'm not sure whether I'll be participating in the new site, but maybe, in a strange way, it might rekindle the poly on-topic, given the poster base. Maybe not - we'll see - but I'll probably be lurking on the Civ 4 area over at the new place for a bit to see how it goes.

Does this count as a "LOOK AT ME" thread, Vel?

Jon closed all of the trollish threads last night, so let's make sure this doesn't turn into another one.

*gasp!* Oh dear...I never saw that coming! Asher's 'leet skillz just keep surprising me!

Yep, I suppose it does. A tradition has formed at 'poly that when a poster is leaving, this is how he says g'bye. I'm not the one who invented the tradition...I'm merely following it.

But by all means, feel free to try and steer it into yet another Asher-Look-At-Me-And-My-Latest-Drama-Fest. You've a knack for that sort of thing. It's a real talent.

I'm just pointing out that CHRISTOPHER HARTPENCE. PUBLISHED AUTHOR. OWNER OF VELICOGAMES, INC. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. CANDLE'BRE. needs to look in the mirror before casting impotent stones.

Yes, you had no choice but to make this thread. You are a victim, really.
