  • I went back to read the Earth's Children books. The first four were by far and away much better than the fifth one.

I was able to get my hands on "The Valley of Horses" when I was 12. And my life was never quite the same again.

Unless you're really into 14th century Florence, it's probably very difficult to understand why he introduces all those characters in hell. He wrote in Florentine dialect, and many of the people he talks to in hell lived in Florence at the time. Dante imagined most of his readers would know who he talked about.
In paradise he talks much about theology, and the references to Thomas of Aquino's Summa Theologica are endless.

Explanatory footnotes really come in handy...

      • Footnotes are ESSENTIAL for the Divine Comedy. Otherwise, you have no clue what's going on.

And I prefer the poetry to the prose translations.

          • The writing is horrible. The story is somewhat alright (I like vampire lore), but scary enough the first book is the best of the series

Yeah. I give. I've now switched over to Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere.

                • Don't read it right before bed. It's not a 'horror' story, but it's just as likely to give nightmares if not more, I'd think, for an empathetic person.

                      • just gave up on "against the day". I think I could like this book if I could sit down and read it for 4 hours at a time. I can't, so I get lost and I get bored.

started "anathem" by Stephenson, but haven't gotten very far. anyone read it?

I liked them as a teenage male. haven't really been interested in picking them up again (not sure where I stopped either, but know I didn't read the 5th)
