  • Social Media Bans - poll

For Minors in particular. IIRC Australia has put something in place here, other countries are toying with the idea. Any hard opinions here?

    Public, multi choice.

Pro - we need to protect minors from certain content
    0%
    0
Contra - not enforceable, minors will point, laugh and still use Social Media

    2
Pro - most laws aren't fully enforceable, but we still outlaw stuff
    50.00%

I cannot take the poll, because I am NOT a minor, in particular or otherwise.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

I approve of banning minors from the internet.

And most people under the age of 30.
Libraries are state sanctioned, so they're technically engaged in privateering. - Felch

              Algorithmic social media should DIAF.

I'm Australian and my youngest child is impacted by the ban.

He has been unaffected so far, but various social media platforms are gradually cracking down.

While I don't feel the need to enforce the ban with him, I am in favour of it existing to give parents who do need to intervene when their children have a problem some legs to stand on. Obviously many children will still circumvent, but the same could be said for alcohol for example.

In the meantime our government allows the online gambling industry to actively target minors with advertising across all platforms.

I have had to start accessing porn sites (for research purposes, obviously) using a VPN or prove my age.

I have, through long experience, been trained to be immediately suspicious of any government action rationalized by it being "for the children".

                    You would, of course.

But the parallels to alcohol and tobacco are still there.

I feel similar when I hear refs to "the people". To me it translates most often to "I want things to be like X, so let's claim it's for the common good/the people".

Then again "the children" are a subset of "the people"

As for the topic, it's one of those where I think there's sensible arguments for both pro and con. I'd rather move fwd without a ban, but I also think the "freedom" argument is sometimes (over-)used to just not do anything.

I forgot to add the poll option to protect social media from minors

That could bar Donnie from posting on (un)Truth(un)Social
