I was totally surprised to learn that Rembrandt's "Man with the Golden Helmet" was actually not painted by him himself (ehh him himself, is that correct???)

Since the 1980s it's thought to be a work of one of his students. The Kraut page sez before it was widely considered one of the Rembrandiest of all more or less Rembrandian works of Rembrandt.

I think it should be 'not actually' rather than 'actually not'.

Take a similar structure (verb, adverb, negation, auxiliary verb) - say we replace 'actually' with 'probably', and it may be clearer which is more common grammatically.

Was probably not painted vs Was not probably painted

Both are right, but i don't think many native speakers would use the latter.
