The plan for Venezuela is for IT to be a banana (oil) republic.

Banana republics were countries essentially governed by US corporations. The prototype was United Fruit Co. The extractive corporations were backed by US policy, military, and the CIA. If leaders couldn't be bribed, they were deposed or killed. It was thinly veiled colonization and slavery, enforced by mass murder.

While corporations rule the US, and our economy is extractive in the sense that capital extracts value from labor, it's something we choose to do to ourselves, enforced by our own government. We are not a banana republic.
