Under Putin what the Russian state desires most of all isn't prosperity it is "sovereignty". a "sovereignty" that is defined by total freedom within and out of its national borders and is regarded as solely possessed by great powers. I think Putin would have no problem at all with Russia being a "pariah" so long as restraint on Russia's actions by other states is avoided.
