  • October Surprise Revisited

'Former Texas pol Ben Barnes claims his political mentor, Gov. John Connally Jr., persuaded Mideast leaders to keep US hostages in Iran locked up until the 1980 election that put Ronald Reagan in the White House.'

The Iran hostage crisis consumed the last year of the Carter presidency, contributing to a perception of weakness. Saturday, a new allegation surfaced that Ronald Reagan's campaign worked to prevent the U.S. hostages from being freed before Election Day. Gary Sick, who was the Iran expert on President Carter’s National Security Council, joins John Yang to discuss.

He doesn't say Reagan knew much less ordered it, but it looks like his campaign chief Casey did know. So the Iranians released the captives minutes after Reagan took office and Reagan stole our weapons and sold them to Iran and funded terrorists attacking Nicaragua. Didn't Nixon get accused of telling S Vietnam to end peace negotiations with the north under LBJ?

"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003
