I asked other people IRL this riddle and the closest I got was also 'infinity.' Not all mathematicians, agree, however, that this is the answer.

Actually the answer that I came up with might not be the answer either, I just think it is the closest thing, comparatively. I will accept 2 answers for this riddle:

The mathematical one and/or the comparative one.

I would say you are close but that would be a misnomer of both my definitions. An axiom is too definite (in it's base definition.) However I will give another hint, as I have done all through this:

My comparative/explanatory answer is DEFINED as it is a word in the dictionary, like Elok said. However I do not mean a dictionary definition, I mean a theoretical one. Possibly practical but well just run with it for now.

Remember an equation of some kind might also be acceptable... and also my comparative answer might not be considered mathematics, but it is still related to numbers.

There is an idiom with the answer that also is shared with the word essence.
