A much more accurate read on the feelings of the electorate, and thus Republican politicians.
The fatal shooting of 19 children and two adults on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas, has shocked the country, evoking memories of other tragic school shootings such as Columbine, Newtown and Parkland, and renewing calls for Congress to do something.
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

― C.S. Lewis, The Abolition of Man

The police in Texas barricaded the school and let the shooter slaughter children for 40 minutes. I am so disgusted by all of this.

Unlike the US, Switzerland has mandatory military service for men.
The "funny thing" ist, that the 2nd amendment actually contains a part about the establishment of a "well regulated militia", which usually gets overlooked by the gun nuts and their supporters (like the NRA).

One could argue that (due to the 2nd amendment giving away that its actual purpose is the establishment of a militia), a previous membership in the US National Guard (including a successful accomplishment of the basic training) should be compulsory for everyone wanting to be allowed to buy/posssess arms (and carry/use them outside of an official shooting range)

Could probably even allow hunting rifles (whitelist of qualifying firearms that manufacturers could apply to have their firearms included on) without greatly reducing public safety and deflect a great deal of opposition.

Let's talk about the actual core problem -- politicians and the NRA.

This is exactly the kind of stupid argument I would expect from Kidicious and his ilk.
Kid specializes in trying to put words in people's mouths. And now you come with the same "so you're saying" BS.
                      It's disrespectful and intellectually dishonest.

So stop it. You're better than this.

From memory of my time there, a big difference is the type of guns. The more ammunition a gun can hold, the more tightly regulated it is. Harder to mass murder with single shot weapons.

They also have to pass an exam to be allowed to carry a gun. You also have to have a plausible reason to acquire the type of gun you are after.

If it's easier to buy guns vs. booze something's wrong. This is a good rule of the thumb.

The change occurred in 2020, researchers say. Overall firearm-related deaths increased 13.5% between 2019 and 2020, but such fatalities for those 1 to 19 years old jumped nearly 30%.

"For decades, auto accidents have been the leading cause of death among children, but in 2020 guns were the No. 1 cause, researchers say.

Overall firearm-related deaths increased 13.5% between 2019 and 2020, but such fatalities for those 1 to 19 years old jumped nearly 30%, according to a research letterin New England Journal of Medicine.

Researchers analyzed data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showing that there were a record 45,222 firearm-related deaths in the U.S. in 2020.

Patrick Carter, one of the authors of the research letter and co-director of the University of Michigan's Institute for Firearm Injury Prevention, said about 10% of those deaths — 4,357 in total — were children."
